I was assigned to create a cover report for UMBC's Design Build Fly team for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics' 30th annual Design/Build/Fly Competition. I illustrated a design based on contemporary ideas through clean shapes, bright colors, and clean typography.
I started with looking at different types of art styles heavily based on machinery and technology. I went with mid-century modern styles as it focused on clean shapes and lines and functionality just like the airplane. I also stuck to UMBC's color pallette.
I came up with a couple of drafts of the plane being in the air at different angles. For the left draft, I focused on a feeling of freedom as the plane soars the skies. For the right draft, I focused on showing the plane from an uncommon perspective while giving it a dynamic composition. The draft on the right was approved with some feedback from the client.
To improve the rough design, I first changed the background of the sky to give better contrast against the text and the plane. The second thing I changed was the font from script to a sans serif as it fit the mid-century style more and felt more cohesive to the plane's design.
